The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) Public Investment Fund (PIF) are reportedly now eyeing a move to bring Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Consistent performer

The 27-year-old has been a consistent performer throughout his time at Lazio, reaching double figures for goals and assists combined in five of the last six seasons in Serie A (Transfermarkt).

The 2021/22 season was his best in terms of assists, recording 11 in total, while his 11-goal tally was second only to the 12 that he managed in the 2017/18 campaign (Transfermarkt).

The central midfielder also has six goals and seven assists in 34 games for the Serbia national team, further emphasising how much of a threat he carries from the middle of the park.

The Latest: Newcastle interest

As per Calciomercato, Newcastle have already submitted a bid of just over €50m (£42.3m) for Milinkovic-Savic, but Lazio are holding out for at least €70m (£59.2m).

Arsenal have also been rebuffed with the same offer, and it could turn out to be a two-way fight between the two Premier League clubs for his signature.

The Verdict: Statement signing

Milinkovic-Savic would certainly be a statement signing which would help really kick-start the new era under Saudi ownership at St James’ Park.

The 27-year-old is a player in his prime, and judging by this report, he would surpass the club-record £40m that Newcastle paid for Joelinton back in 2019.

Described as ‘dynamic’, ‘stunning’ and ‘electric’ by journalist and Lazio supporter and writer Jerry Mancini, the Magpies would be getting a real coup if they can bring the Serbian to Tyneside.
